Dr. Cameron Mercer will speak on "Exploring the Impact History of the Moon" at the May 21 meeting of the Black Canyon Astronomical Society (BCAS), to begin at 7 p.m. in the Partners' community room, 511 East 10th Street, Delta.
Dr. Mercer holds a B.A. in physics and geology from Middlebury College. He recently obtained his Ph.D. from Arizona State University, where he dated lunar samples using the 40Ar/39Ar laser microprobe technique. His results are helping to decipher the complex impact record of the moon, which has been bombarded for nearly the entire history of our solar system. He will also discuss international plans for future lunar exploration.
Dr. Mercer is a graduate of Montrose High School. He recently accepted a position as a postdoctoral fellow at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center and the Catholic University of America.
The BCAS stimulates public interest in and knowledge of astronomy in Delta, Montrose, and Ouray counties. Monthly meetings are held in Delta or Montrose. The BCAS also holds public sky viewing events. Find more information at BlackCanyonAstronomy.com or phone 970-856-7716.
On May 1, the Cedaredge board of trustees met for a special meeting to appropriate an additional $35,000 from reserves as a loan to the golf course fund.
