At the May 7 meeting of the Delta City Council, John Vigil and Ryan Crick were appointed to three-year terms on the Delta Planning Commission. Each has served a partial term. Because there are only two vacant seats, and the council interviewed the two candidates about a year ago, they were unanimously approved with additional interviews.

"I'm excited to see where we go in the next three years," said Ryan Crick, who was seated in the audience.

Council members unanimously approved a resolution supporting a 1 percent county sales tax to fund public safety. If the measure is approved by voters in November, it will generate an estimated $2.9 million, to be divided among the sheriff's office and police departments in Delta, Cedaredge, Paonia and Hotchkiss. The Delta Police Department's share would be approximately $900,000 annually.

Council members considered liquor license renewals for two restaurants, Confluence Café and House of Chin. Under normal circumstances, renewals are handled administratively by the city clerk. Both restaurants, however, had been cited for serving alcohol to minors in the past year. After reviewing the circumstances surrounding both citations, council members voted to renew the liquor licenses with a strong recommendation staff undergo alcohol server seller training.

Special use permits were approved for the Colorado Parks and Wildlife shooting trailer and for camping in Confluence Park during the Salute to Armed Forces Festival.

The agenda included a number of routine items. Before adjourning, council changed two upcoming meeting dates. After it was determined several council members would not be available for the next regularly scheduled meeting on May 21, it was agreed a special meeting would be held Tuesday, May 14, at 6 p.m. And due to the Colorado Municipal League conference, the June 18 meeting was moved up to Monday, June 17. Agendas are posted online at www.cityofdelta.net.
