Like so many visitors before them, Barb Allen and her husband Jim were just passing through Cedaredge when they were sufficiently impressed to purchase property and build a house.
That was 30 years ago and soon after arriving in the Surface Creek Valley, Barb began volunteering at the Surface Creek Animal Shelter. In those days the animal shelter was located at the home of the late Harry Staub, a community activist who was also involved in the formation of the town’s annual Applefest celebration.
As a seasoned volunteer, Barb has witnessed the growth of the shelter from a cramped trailer to the present day renovated facility. And she’s worn many hats from serving on the shelter’s board of directors, to volunteering at the Shelter Shoppe thrift store, to her present role of greeting shelter visitors at the front desk on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Barb is also an artist who enjoys traveling to seek out new landscapes for her paintings.
Anyone interested in volunteering at the shelter, or donating to support the shelter, or adopting a pet is invited to visit the facility at 265 SE High Country Ave. or call 970-856-2346. The shelter is open every day from 8-11 a.m. and 3-5 p.m.
