Christmas crime

Zachary Bayhan, 22

The Delta Police Department arrested Zachary Bayhan, 22, in the parking lot of City Market last night, Feb. 12, with the help of both the Delta County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Patrol. The arrest occurred after a reportedly approximate 30 minutes of pursuit by the three law enforcement agencies.

Bayhan was previously arrested on Christmas Day for multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, as explained in the DCI article, “Christmas Day report of disturbance leads to arrest.”

According to a special report from Delta Police Department Public Information Officer Jamie Head, an officer noticed Bayhan, who was already a wanted person, outside of a residence in the 300 block of Dodge Street. Bayhan got into a vehicle and drove away.

A license plate check revealed that the vehicle Bayhan was driving had been reported as stolen.

“After approximately a thirty-minute chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies the vehicle was rendered inoperable and came to a stop at 122 Gunnison River Drive, City Market parking lot,” the report stated. “The driver was arrested on multiple warrants and additional charges including traffic infractions, felony drug possession and more.”

Head reported that the main areas of travel during the chase were through various residential and business areas including Main Street, Palmer Street, Dodge Street, Silver Street, Confluence Drive, Highway 50, H-38 Road, 1575 Road, I Road and 1550 Road.

During the incident, one police vehicle was damaged.

The car chase ended when state troopers successfully utilized “stop sticks,” which lie across the road and deflate tires of vehicles that run over them. Bayhan and the stolen vehicle “eventually came to a stop in the City Market Parking lot,” the report stated.

Bayhan was arrested and jailed on charges of vehicular eluding, obstruction of governmental operations, resisting arrest, two counts of felony bail bond violation, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a schedule 2 controlled substance, disregard of a stop sign, driving a motor vehicle with a revoked license, hit and run traffic accident, driving a motor vehicle on the wrong side of a divided roadway and operating an uninsured motor vehicle on the roadway.

Bayhan is being held at the Delta County Detention Facility on four additional warrants with a total of $49,500 in bonds.
