On March 10, the Black Mesa CattleWomen sponsored the third quarter beef cook-off for the Hotchkiss K-8 Middle School cooking class taught by Terrea Bear and Glenda Young. The students learned about beef, basic nutrition, safe food preparation and presentation. Students took an individual written test over the materials presented. The teams choose a beef recipe, menu and table setting then worked together as a group to cook, present the beef dish, and cleanup within 30 minutes. Students on each of the four teams were provided with a pound of ground beef donated by Joetta Burns of the Black Mesa CattleWomen to prepare their beef recipe.

Judges for this cook-off were Joetta Burns, Pauline Carr and Teresa Burns of the Black Mesa CattleWomen. These ladies tallied the scores from the students’ written exams, research paper, their presentation of the entree, meeting the requirements of My Plate, their table setting, following directions of the recipe and cleanup. The teams were very competitive and scored high. The first place team calling itself the Bad Beef scoring 86.7 points and prepared Bacon Guc Burger. Congratulations to Noel White, Roan Spencer, Aneka Price, Brooke Angelovich and Laynee Zeldenthuis. Each of them received a T-shirt from the Black Mesa CattleWomen. The second place team called itself the Beef Gregor Chude with a score of 85.7. Each member received a beef cook-off cap. Team members were Canaan Church, Gage Adam, AJ Lozanoa and Lane Stroh and they prepared Hamburgers. The third place team called itself the Beef Bros and prepared the judges a Beef Quesadila with Guacamole. Members of the team were Jaylee Monroy, Jasmine Soria, Guadalupe Elizalde and Taylen Prescott. They received water bottles as prize. The fourth place team called itself the Zoey Londan and Aaralyn Gallob. They each received $2.

The Black Mesa CattleWomen would like to thank the Hotchkiss K-8 staff for allowing it to host this contest each quarter. These young people are doing an amazing job of planning a balanced meal to meet all the nutritional requirement of My Plate and preparing great dishes with lots of flavor.
