Over the same weekend that Cedaredge High School senior Owen Craig received the Boettcher Scholarship, senior Joshua Deal was awarded the Daniels Fund Scholarship.
With the full ride scholarship, Deal plans to go to the University of Colorado Boulder to get a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, a master’s degree in business administration and a minor in business entrepreneurship.
Deal received the Daniels Fund due to his exceptional GPA of 4.23 and extra involvement in groups including National Honor Society and track and field.
Deal said that he could only speculate what ultimately led to him being selected, but said, “I’m assuming that it was my character because that’s what the Daniels Fund tends to look for is important qualities like leadership qualities and integrity, things like that, and of course, you also do have to have a promise of high achievement.”
He never questioned whether he should go for the Daniels Fund, and the full application process took a long time to complete.
“I think it took like 13 hours to fill the whole thing out and get all the essays written,” Deal said. “I was expecting it to take quite a while, but I didn’t think it was going to take 13 hours.” Deal said he felt good about it once it was finally complete after working on it throughout the span of a week.
Deal will head to CU Boulder in the fall to begin his further education with the help of the Daniels Fund. The scholarship will cover tuition, room and board, books, supplies and miscellaneous educational expenses, according to the Daniels Fund website. As a “last dollar” scholarship, it covers expenses after grants and other scholarships.
