Delta High School golf
The Panthers participated in the Vail Mountain School Invitational at Vail Golf Club on Sept. 7. The team landed in 12th place with its score of 265. (Top three teams: Vail Mountain 221, Steamboat Springs 230 and Aspen 231.) Senior Ethan Kappel tied for 25th place with his score of 82.
The team score included Kappel’s 82, Shay Heim’s 88, Derek Boyd’s 95, Kyler Pietak’s 96, and Joe Siennicki’s 107.
“I have four solid varsity players, Ethan Kappell, Derek Boyd, Shay Heim, Joe Siennicki and a host of players fighting for that fifth spot,” said coach Frank Walch. “We’ve been working on the short game, putting, chipping, and course management.”
North Fork High School cross country
On Sept. 10, the Miners participated in the Coal Ridge Invitational. The boys team placed fifth out of 11 teams, and the girls placed eighth out of 11 teams.
Boys individual times are: Alejandro Garcia 18:34, Christopher Hatheway 20:08, Ben Rodriguez 20:21, Matt Delaney 21:42, Jose Mojarro 21:50, Pablo Camacho 22:09, Isaac Forbes 22:14, Kevin Regelman 22:44, and Kegan Davis-Daniels 40:59. (PR Season best)
Girls individual times: Karlie Egging 22:34, Cece Houseweart 23:56, Leah Vader 23:56, Grace Madden 25:37, Emily Reedy 25:41, Livia Stahly 26:48, Zoey Duncan 27:17, and Heidi Johnson 31:15. (PR Season best)
“The kids ran well and continue to show big improvements,” said coach Kelly Cowan.
The team races on Saturday, Sept. 18, in Gunnison.
Cedaredge High School softball
On Sept. 9, the Bruins took on Eagle Valley with a final score of 24-23.
Coach Lonny Stroud said the team has numerous chances to win the game but fell short.
Ayralin Hoffbauer was MVP for this game. She went 5 for 5 with 2 singles and 3 doubles.
“She had some great digs and stretches at first and was a part of a perfect double play,” he said.
Larissa Cotten pitched well and had a home run. Elizabeth Galley also had a home run. Kayla Davis had 2 singles, 1 double and 1 triple. Lily Sinkay batted .800.
“Really team wide we are hitting very well and I love how well the girls made the adjustment between a slow and fast pitcher,” the coach added.
North Fork High School volleyball
The Miners took part in the Dawson Tournament on the Front Range this past weekend. The team had two losses and a win. The team is 5-3, overall.
On Sept. 11, the team faced off against Union Colony Prep and lost 2-1. The sets were 25-23 (Union Colony Prep), 25-18 (North Fork) and 15-11 (Union Colony Prep). Junior Kacie McCollum led the team with 9 kills. The team had a collective 37 digs.
The second game was against Liberty Common which was another loss for the team at 2-0. Sets were 25-15 and 25-19. McCollum again led the team in kills with 6. And the team had a collective 15 digs.
And the final game was against Dawson School which was a win for the team at 2-0. Set scores were 25-23 and 25-13. Junior Delilah Vasquez led the team with 7 kills. The team had a collective 26 digs.
The team plays again Sept. 14 against Rifle and 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, against Vail Christian.
Delta High School softball
As part of homecoming games on Sept. 10, the Panthers had a double header against Meeker at home.
In the first game, Delta lost 12-10. No stats were available by press time. In the second game the Panthers again fell to Meeker 9-6. These stats were not available by press time. The team is now 3-6, overall.
