There is a growing concern about how the COVID-19 vaccine mandate will impact staffing at Delta Health’s Hospital and Clinics. Healthcare nationwide is seeing significant shortages, especially in direct patient care staff, but the community could also see an impact in areas of support staff who provide operations and supportive services in the organization.

“As an organization, we have been diligent, from the beginning, by vaccinating and encouraging vaccination among the healthcare workers throughout the County,” said Matt Heyn, Delta Health CEO. “Understanding the importance of the vaccine is one thing, but from a business standpoint, we could be facing difficult staffing shortages. We are in the business of people, and we do not take losing any of our staff lightly.”

At this time Delta Health has not had any employees reportedly leave because of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

The State Board of Health vaccination mandate directs our organization to draft policies regarding employee vaccination for COVID-19. The proposed mandate allows the creation of certain categories of exempt employees. Delta Health administration is working on exempt categories of employees – a medical exemption and a religious exemption. As an organization, Delta Health is permitted to draft its own exemption affidavits.

It is important to note that the State mandate has not yet been made final, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has already made some changes to the original draft language.

“This is a difficult task for all organizations at this time that are in the unique position to provide care to a population while looking at losing staff at a critical time,” said Heyn. “Delta Health is blessed with tremendous staff that has come together in this difficult moment, and continues to work side-by-side in the care of our patients.”

Delta Health is currently in the process of crafting policies and procedures in response to the State Board of Health emergency ruling. The administration is carefully and thoughtfully looking into all options and will be completing these policies and procedures and will be communicated to employees. Delta Health Administration has been in full and open communication with all employees on the situation and has asked them to be patient as they continue diligently working on policies and procedures for staff.

All employees who wish to be vaccinated have had and will continue to have access to the Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. This has been made and is available through vaccine clinics, the employee health department, and the Delta Health Primary Care Clinics.
