Delta’s cross country team continues to show improvement through the season. Member Paige Kehmeier continues to impress as she places third in the team’s latest meet.

The Panthers participated in the Coal Ridge Invitational on Sept. 10. The girls team came in sixth place and the boys came in seventh.

“The meet went well,” said coach JB Lopez. “On the boys side, top runner John Dexter did not have a good race but still managed to come in 16th. Paige Kehmeier continues to impress with a third place finish, only behind last year’s 3A state champion and last year’s 11 place girl. Paige’s time was 19:57, breaking that barrier just before mid season.”

According to the coach, the rest of the boys squad is young and they will see how they progress through the rest of the season. On the girls side, the team lost two key runners who decided not to run this year and that hurt them as far as depth, but the girls are hanging tough.

They compete again 4:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 at Ridgway State Park (Ouray), and 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Gunnison.
