The 2019 budget adopted by the Delta City Council included funding for two additional patrol officers. Chief Luke Fedler recently hired Thomas Barker and Garrett Henderson to fill those two slots.

Officer Thomas Barker was born in Toronto, Canada in 1987. In 1994 he moved to Conifer, graduating from high school there in 2005. He joined the U.S. Army in May 2006 and worked as a 13 Foxtrot (forward observer). Officer Barker was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C., and he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne. Officer Barker was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in 2008 and worked on personal security detachments and route clearance.

After he was honorably discharged in September 2010, he started his own security company on the Front Range. He moved to Delta in 2016 and enrolled in the Technical College of the Rockies Law Enforcement Academy. He was with Delta County Sheriff's Office from October 2017 to February 2019, when he joined the Delta Police Department. He is currently in the field training process.

Officer Barker makes his home in the Delta area.

Officer Garrett Henderson was born and raised in the Delta County area. Officer Henderson graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1997 and attended Western State College in Gunnison. He completed law enforcement training at Delta-Montrose Technical College in August 2000.

He began his law enforcement career with Cedaredge Marshal's Office the day after the academy graduation and held that position until 2003.

In 2003 he took a position with the Buena Vista Police Department and attained the rank of sergeant. Officer Henderson was also a member of the Chaffee County Drug Task Force for four years. In 2007 Officer Henderson took a job with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and was part of the Mesa County Street Crimes Unit for three years as well as being a complex crime/property crime investigator. In 2015 Officer Henderson took a job with the Fruita Police Department and attained the rank of corporal.

When he decided to move closer to home, he applied for one of the two new positions that had been created with the Delta Police Department. Officer Henderson started with the police department on March 11 and is currently assigned to patrol. Officer Henderson is an FBI arrest control instructor and has been teaching at the Western Colorado Community College as an academy instructor for the past three years. Officer Henderson is also a field training officer (FTO) for approximately 17 years under the Kaminski model and a Reno FTO model since 2008 and has been a certified TASER instructor for 15 years.
