Garnet Mesa Elementary parents and guardians were notified by Delta County School District via email that their child was in close contact with a student or staff member who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Due to the positive exposure, the district is calling for affected Garnet Mesa students and staff to quarantine until Jan. 19, which is 10 days from exposure to the infected individual.

“The person who was confirmed positive was in contact with almost all the students therefore, GMES will be closed to in-person learning this week and students will be learning remotely,” Superintendent Caryn Gibson said.

Gibson said staff will be at the school teaching and planning for remote learning. She stressed that the appropriate protocols have been observed and the exposed individuals have been notified and are quarantining.

“DCSD continues to work closely with the Delta County Health Department, as well as strictly adhering to the health standards and guidelines set forth by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. DCSD is appreciative of our students, families, and staff members for being flexible and adjusting to the situation,” Gibson said.

Per district policy only affected families at specific schools are notified and given instructions by the district. Families not notified should proceed as usual. Teachers reached out to parents/guardians via email and text to let them know when packets for the next week would be available.

”Garnet Mesa students and staff are doing a very good job with remote learning and working towards making it a seamless transition. K-2nd grade has received packets for remote learning this week. Our 3rd -5th grades are virtual learning through Google Classroom,” said Gibson, adding, “Teachers are very optimistic and have been prepared in the event of a quarantine situation. We want to thank the parents, students, and staff for working with the School District and adjusting to this COVID year.”

DCSD serves 4,792 and covers 1,100 square miles and includes the towns of Cedaredge, Crawford, Delta, Hotchkiss and Paonia. GMES has 502 students and 67 staff members.
