Avery Forester (left) and Sarah Henderson are teaming up to open Delta County’s newest outdoor sports shop in downtown Cedaredge.

A local Surface Creek entrepreneur and a former Delta County resident with a wealth of retail experience are partnering to open a new outdoor store in downtown Cedaredge. Located at 105 W. Main St. unit B, Grand Mesa Outdoors has taken over the building formerly occupied by Impressionz Art Gallery.

Cedaredge resident Avery Forester and Sarah Henderson are set to open the doors of their new shop on Monday, Nov. 25. And the two have been busy erecting signs, stocking shelves and setting up retail procedures.

Forester grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, and later attended Western Colorado University in Gunnison graduating in 1967 and then attended graduate school at Western Washington University. Eventually he relocated to Cedaredge where he started Western Colorado Wine Tours, a seasonal business that operates from May through October. An avid outdoorsman who’s raced as a downhill skier, he’s also an ice climber and fly fisherman.

Henderson is a Colorado native who was born to a ranching family in Hotchkiss and raised in Montrose. She has worked as a store manager for Tractor Supply Company working at the company’s stores in Delta, Buena Vista and Gunnison. She’s climbed 54 of Colorado 14,000-foot peaks — conquering all but four of the states so-called “fourteeners.” She’s into all outdoor sports including hunting and fishing.

Grand Mesa Outdoors will specialize in backpacking, hiking and camping gear. Fly fishing supplies will be added in the spring and summer. The store will also feature apparel and footwear and will rent snowshoes and cross-country skis in the winter plus paddleboards in spring and summer.

The store will carry several brand-names familiar to outdoor enthusiasts including but not limited to: apparel by Outdoor Research; socks and beanies by Smart Wool; jackets by Loki; packs by Osprey; Colorado brand hammocks; Astral footwear; and Big Agnes and Sea-to-Summit camping gear.

The store will be open year-round.

Henderson said she’s “excited to turn my passion into a business and help others who love the outdoors by providing high quality gear.”

Forester’s thrilled to be part of a new enterprise which he describes as “the only option of its kind in Delta County.”
