Do you have a compelling idea, story or performance to share?

Ignite Delta County could be for you. A program of the Technical College of the Rockies ENGAGE Initiative, Ignite is seeking speakers to give live presentations on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Grand Mesa Arts and Events Center in Cedaredge. Between 12-15 selected speakers will give a short talk and slide presentation on topics limited only to their imaginations and creativity.

Deadline for applying is Dec. 11.

“Ignite is an ongoing series of speedy presentations on ideas, projects, and stories that inspire hearts and enlighten minds,” much like speedy, rapid-fire Ted Talks,” said ENGAGE director Shawn Gardner. Backed by 20 auto-advance slides (one every 15 seconds), each speaker has five minutes to tell his story. The aim is to inspire hearts and enlighten minds, said Gardner. “The end goal is to get the creative community to self organize, self perpetuate and self propagate.”

“Ignite events are happening in cities around the world,” said Gardner. The Ignite mission of “Everyone speaks” is built on the belief that public speaking builds confidence and events like Ignite build community. “Our goal is to draw out interesting ideas, projects and stories to inspire our hearts and spawn innovation.”

The event “is a drawing out of latent potential,” said Gardner.

“It’s an intimidating format,” said Gardner. Because talks require skill and practice, ENGAGE is working with Toastmasters International, a global organization headquartered in Englewood, Colo., and dedicated to developing leadership and communication skills.

For those wanting to work behind the scene, Ignite Delta County is a volunteer-run event with several open positions, including A/V tech to operate sound and projecting equipment, slide wrangler to manage slide presentations, marketing wrangler, videographer, photographer, speaker coach, event producer, and emcee. It’s also an apprentice/intern opportunity for high school students. Descriptions of each position and a volunteer form are available at engagedeltacounty.org/ignite/.
