Grand Mesa Fire 6/11/20

A fire burns on the lower Grand Mesa in the area of Squirrel Rock Road. A helicopter flies in front of the smoke.

A fire broke out north of Cedaredge Thursday afternoon, located in the area of Squirrel Rock Road at the base of Grand Mesa.

At about 5:35 p.m., Delta County Government and the Delta County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order for residents between High Park Road and east to Highway 65, south to Brimstone Road and Ward Creek Road.

“If you live in this area, you are asked to evacuate the area to a safe place. The fire department is on scene, additional information will be shared as it becomes available,” the order states.

According to Kimberlee Phillips, public affairs officer of Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG), the fire is not on public lands at this time, but instead on private lands.

According to Cedaredge Fire Chief Steve Hanson, the fire is in the area of Squirrel Rock Road, Cedaredge. The size of the fire is unknown at this time, but the spread is significant enough to be easily spotted from Delta.

The fire is currently being fought by the Cedaredge Volunteer Fire Department and by aircraft.
