The North Fork Miners returned to action after a bye week. They traveled to Monte Vista to face the Pirates. Defensively they pitched a shutout. Offensively they used their ground and pound offense to do all of their scoring.
Rushing for a team total 274 yards on 44 carries they were able to control the clock, led by running back Mordecai White who rushed for 147 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Drayden Taylor added 87 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Taylor finished the night with 5 completions on 12 attempts for 55 yards in the passing game. All 55 yards were credited to Blaine Peebles.
But the night belonged to the defense who held the Pirates to 103 yards of total offense — 27 by air and 76 on the ground. Carter Neff led the Miners with 15 of the team’s 90 tackles. 19 of those tackles were for a loss.
Neither team was able to score in the first quarter and not until late into the second quarter. Taylor opened up the scoring with a two yard dive after a drive that began on the North Fork 41-yard line. The second score would come on the next drive that began on the Monte Vista 46-yard line after a 22 yard punt return by Peebles. White would cap off the drive with a 15 yard run to pay dirt.
In Monte Vista’s opening drive of the second half it appeared that they had some momentum on offense until a sack on 4th down turned the ball over to the Miners on their own 39. It would not be until 7:13 remaining in the contest that the Miners would tack on their final touchdown. A 2 yard dive by White.
The Miners (2-0) will play their home opener against the Olathe Pirates (0-3) on Friday 9/17 at 7 p.m. in Hotchkiss. Olathe is coming off of a 28-22 loss to the Center Vikings.
