PHS Cross Country

Paonia assistant cross country coach Taylor Polson and cross country team member Isaac Forbes cross Minnesota Creek at Paonia River Park as part of the first ever PHS Homecoming 5k. Several members of the running community participated in the race, which the team hopes will become an annual event.

More than 20 members of the local running community showed their support Sept. 22 for the Paonia cross country team in the best way they know how: by running with them.

Dubbed the first ever Paonia Homecoming 5k, the event was the last-minute idea of cross country runner Katya Schwieterman, who planned the event after the team voted to skip the annual Anna Banana cross country meet in Fruita. A senior, who also serves on student executive council, Schwieterman said the team didn’t want to miss homecoming, and they needed a good workout.

Competing against the running community gave the team a good workout, said Schwieterman. “We run together all week, so adding some new faces into the mix was really the goal.”

Several individuals showed up to assist with monitoring the course, timing and other duties.

Head coach Josh Burns said he’d like to turn the event into an annual alumni/community event. Schwieterman started it, said Burns. “Now let’s start building a tradition and a legacy around it.”
