Earlier this month, unknown thieves removed a pedestrian gate and chopped up a post at the improved North Road parking area adjacent to Fruitgrowers Reservoir.

The reservoir, which is located in the Surface Creek Valley just east of Eckert, is a popular destination for birdwatchers and hikers. The reservoir and surrounding land, including the parking area, are managed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. A reclamation spokesperson confirmed that the agency is aware of the damage and indicated that repairs will be made. According to a reclamation public affairs representative, vandalism on Bureau of Reclamation property is a federal offense and subject to fines ranging from $200 to $500, with the potential mandate of a court appearance.

Anyone who witnessed the vandalism or has more information is asked to contact local law enforcement.
