Following up on the Delta County Independent’s Dec. 23 story “Prospective pets reveal their Christmas wishes,” we’ve learned that — of the dozen animals featured in the story — all but two have been adopted. In an email, Jacki Dapkus of the Surface Creek Animal Shelter (SCAS) reports that folks have adopted dogs named Baxter, Misty, Caesar, Bruce and Bear-bear. Only Meatloaf is still looking for just the right match. “On the cat side of things,” she notes, “Mia, Noodle, Petunia, Cynthia (who turned out to be male so name changed to Sidney) and Golden” have found new homes. And on Jan 11, “Pat our lovely floor cat went to live in Boulder.” This means that Ivan, a Christmas-wish cat with special needs who has not yet been adopted, will take over the role of floor kitty.
The shelter’s floor kitty keeps the all-volunteer staff entertained and serves as official greeter for those visiting the shelter. The shelter is located at 265 SE High Country Ave. in Cedaredge. Hours are 8-11 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. every day of the week, but appointments are required due to COVID considerations. Those wishing to visit or volunteer at the shelter must call 970-856-2346 to make an appointment and masks must be worn.
Volunteers are welcome, especially those who have time to walk dogs or anyone who can provide a temporary foster home for a cat or kitten awaiting adoption. Call the number above to volunteer or learn more about fostering a feline.
Those who cannot adopt an animal can still support the shelter by donating items to and shopping at the Shelter Shoppe thrift store at 110 SE Frontier Ave., Suite D, in Cedaredge. Or direct cash donations can be made by sending a check payable to SCAS, with the word “donation” in the memo line, to Surface Creek Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 853, Cedaredge, CO 81413.
