Both basketball teams from Paonia are firing on all cylinders.

The Eagles boys' and girls' teams are both 11-1 and undefeated in 1A/2A Western Slope League play. At the end of a five-game road stretch, Paonia is at Meeker on Friday and at Hotchkiss on Tuesday.

After beating Cedaredge last week, the Eagles boys are No. 5 in the state and Paonia's girls secured the No. 2 spot in 2A according to the most recent CHSAA online poll.

Paonia 68, Caprock 36

The Eagles boys beat Caprock last Friday on the road and improved to 11-1, 5-0 in league play.

Paonia jumped ahead 23-4 after one quarter and never looked back. It led 47-10 at halftime and coach Chase Roeber worked the bench in the second half of the big win.

Dagan Rienks led the Eagles in scoring once again, pouring in 17 points. Colby Simpson threw in 12, Enoch Kropp scored 11 and Francisco Lopez netted 10 points in the victory.

Paonia 73, Caprock 21

The Eagles girls' squad cruised to a 20-2 lead after one quarter and led 41-6 at halftime as Paonia won in a rout.

Paonia was led by McKenna Palmer's 14 points and 9 rebounds. Ashley Van Vleet scored 10 points in the win. Sophia Anderson also netted 10 and sank three 3-pointers.

Brittany Kendall was the third Eagle to record 10 points in the win and Emily Pieper led the defensive effort for Paonia with four steals.

HHS 69, Rangely 60

The Hotchkiss boys' basketball team continued to compete in 1A/2A Western Slope League play and improved its league mark to 3-2 after winning in Rangely last Friday.

The Bulldogs are 4-8 overall on the season.

Hotchkiss started strong and enjoyed a 21-18 lead after one quarter and upped its advantage to 40-27 at halftime.

Rangely had a strong third quarter, but the Bulldogs won the fourth frame 17-14 and held on for the victory.

Hotchkiss is at Plateau Valley on Friday and then hosts Paonia on Tuesday.

Rangely 48, HHS 31

Another slow start doomed the Hotchkiss girls' squad, which fell to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in league action after the defeat.

Hotchkiss hasn't been able to start well in any of its games this year and Rangely jumped ahead 18-2 after the first quarter.

The Bulldogs came back to win the second and fourth quarters, but Rangely's lead was too big to overcome.

Hotchkiss is at Plateau Valley on Friday and then hosts Paonia on Tuesday.
