Nine Paonia football players earned a spot on this year's 1A Western Slope conference teams.
Six players made the 1A WSL first team.
This year's 1A WSL Player of the Year is No. 11, senior Anthony Felice. A running back and offensive linebacker, Felice averaged 7.4 yards per carry and 78 yards per game, compiling 1,145 all purpose yards for the season and scoring a conference-high 11 touchdowns. On defense Felice completed 50 solo and 15 assisted tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack and two hurries. Felice was named either overall, defensive, offensive or special teams player of the game 10 times this season. A three-year varsity player, he had a career total 1,947 all-purpose yards for Paonia.
Senior Jesse Burns rushed for 495 yards and 36 TDs for the season. A four-year varsity player, Burns was also the recipient of the first "Casey Gillenwater Award for Sportsmanship, Grit & Determination." The award honors Gillenwater, a 2011 graduate of Paonia High School and all-state quarterback for the Eagles, who lost his life in an accident at the age of 25.
Runningback / middle linebacker Sackett Chesnik had 66 solo and 30 assisted tackles for the season and rushed for 408 yards and five TDs, one on a fumble recovery. On special teams he averaged almost 20 yards per kickoff return.
Junior quarterback Grey Neal completed 27 of 62 passes for 437 yards and five TDs. Neal also rushed for 306 yards and five TDs in 89 carries.
A guard and defensive end, junior Justin Holt was a force on both sides of the ball, averaging 3.6 tackles per game and had two sacks on the season.
Levi Peterson, a junior tackle and defensive end, averaged four tackles per game and completed two sacks.
Three Eagles were named to the 1A WSL second team. Junior Austyn Norris, a defensive/offensive tackle, averaged 3.5 tackles per game and had three sacks on the season.
Wide receiver, Carlos Lozano had three of his seven receptions which went for touchdowns.
Senior David Lozano averaged 39 yards per reception and 43.5 yards per kickoff for a total 1,437 yards in 33 kickoffs.
On Dec. 2, officers of the Delta Police Department responded to a report of an assault. Officers spoke with a 64-year-old male with a bleeding injury on his neck.
