The Crawford American Legion Lynch-Cotten Post 190 will Memorial Day ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 27, at Crawford Cemetery. Each year, according to Legionnaire Larry Kontour, the post honors veterans who have passed away in the last year. This year's ceremony honors Korean War veterans Robert Reed and John Sommer. The ceremony will include the traditional firing squad and playing of Taps.
Following services, the Fruitland Mesa Women's Club will serve its Memorial Day roast beef dinner at Crawford Methodist Church featuring Homestead Beef and all the fixins'. Cost is $5 for children under 12, $10 for adults. Community members are asked to donate pies for dessert.
In honor of Memorial Day weekend, the Hotchkiss Veterans of Foreign Wars Black Canyon Post 9333 Ladies Auxiliary will accept donations for its annual poppy distribution from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 24, at the Hotchkiss City Market. The VFW Memorial Day service begins at 10 a.m. Monday, at Riverside Cemetery.
The American Legion Wilson Head Post 97 in Paonia will hold Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday. The first of four services begins at 9 a.m. at Somerset Cemetery. A service at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia follows at 10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., a wreath drop ceremony will be held on the Grand Avenue Bridge. The final service begins at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Cemetery.
On Saturday, May 25, the Post 97 Women's Auxiliary holds its annual Poppy Day at Don's Market. All donations are gratefully accepted.
