At Saturday's Cardinal Invitational meet at Grand Valley High School, North Fork track teams took one last shot at improving times and qualifying for this week's Colorado State Track and Field Championships. The meet runs this Thursday-Saturday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.
The Hotchkiss and Paonia girls teams are qualified for this week's state meet in the 400m, 800m, 1600m, 3200m and 800m sprint medley relays.
The Hotchkiss girls scored 61.5 points to finish eighth at Grand Valley.
Senior Kaiya Firor won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.74 seconds. In state 2A rankings, Firor is ranked first in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and 400m dash.
Adair Ela placed third 400m dash in 1:07.03 (SB), and teammate Indigo Miller Barnes placed fourth in a season-best (SB) time of 1:07.09.
Freshman state qualifier Vianney Mendoza threw the shot put season-best 34 feet, 7.5 inches to win bronze.
In distance events, Karlie Egging, who was pre-qualified to compete at state in the 3200m run, finished third in the 1600m (5:57.47). In the 3200m Katie Powers placed fifth (15:32.04).
The 1600m team of Lottie Hollembeak, Firor, Shay Glaser and Elsie Vasquez won silver with a season-best time of 4:12.48; the 3200m team of Egging, Miller-Barnes, Mariah Griffith and Nadia Hill won bronze in a SB time of 10:58.23; and the 400m relay team of Hollembeak, Ela, Vasquez and Glaser placed fifth in 52.57 seconds.
The Hotchkiss men's team scored 48 points to place sixth out of 14 teams.
In the 3200m relay, Micah Defield, Kenny Drbohlav, Cochran and Saul Cortez won gold with a state qualifying time of 8:59.36.
In the 300m hurdles, freshman Blaine Peebles won silver with a season-best time of 44.09 seconds. In 110m hurdles, Peebles placed third overall and moved up to 11th in state 2A rankings
with a season-best time of 17.01.
In the 1600m run Kenny Drbohlav won bronze with a season-best time of 5:15.10.
The 1600m relay team Robert Cochran, Jace Peebles, Oliver Mendoza and Micah Defield placed fourth in a season-best time of 3:41.62.
Also qualifying for state are Cochran in the 400m and 800m, the 1600m relay team, and Blaine Peebles in the 110m hurdles.
Paonia track teams placed second at the Cardinal Invitational.
In their final meet ahead of state competition, the Paonia girls scored 88.5 points to place second out of 13 teams Saturday at the Grand Valley Cardinal Invitational track and field meet.
In her first win of the season, junior state qualifier Katya Schwieterman brought home gold in the 1600-meter run with a new personal record (PR) of 5 minutes, 53.08 seconds. Schwieterman is already qualified for state in the 3200m run.
In another gold-winning performance, the 800m sprint medley team of Lyla Hayutin-Baril, Sadie Miller, Alexandra Eaton and Poppy Lightfoot moved up to eighth place in state rankings with a PR of 1:55.67.
In the high jump, junior Sadie Miller moved up to the No. 3 spot in state 2A rankings with a personal-best height of 5'-2". Sadie Lee placed fourth with a height of 4'-9".
In 100m hurdles, state qualifier Alexandra Eaton won bronze with a PR of 17.53; in 300m hurdles, state qualifier Sadie Lee placed fifth (51:42).
In the 800m run, state qualifiers Tawny Roberts of Paonia placed fourth in 2:30.41 (PR) and Ceylon Carter placed sixth (2:32.96).
In throwing events, Lauryn Kiefer won silver in discus with a personal-best throw of 108'-11.25". Sabrian Leighton won shot put with a season-best throw of 36'-4.5". Both are qualified for state competition in their respective event.
Based on her second-place performance at the 2A/1A Western Slope League championships, Lightfoot is ranked fourth in state in the triple jump. Also making the top 18 are Eaton in the 100m and 300m hurdles, Sadie Miller in the long jump, and Sadie Lee in the 300m hurdles.
In men's competition, Paonia placed second with 92 points.
Harley Ewert won the 400m dash with a season best 51.55. In the 800m run, Ethan Bartlett won gold with a season-best time of 2:07.70, Alejandro Garcia fourth in 2:19.57 and Simon Cox placed fifth with a season-best time of 2:20.89.
Alyster Birk placed third in 3200m (11:53.78), and placed fourth in the 1600m with a season-best time of 5:16.23.
Paonia freshman Matthew Kasper ran a season-best time of 16.25 to win the 110m hurdles. Kasper is ranked third in state in the event. Kasper also placed third in the long jump with a mark of 18'-11", and in the 300m hurdles with a PR of 45.22; Calvin Reese placed fifth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 46.22.
The 800m relay team of Noah McDaniel, Logan Green, Matthew Kasper and Harley Ewert won silver with a season-best time of 1:34.36; the 1600m team of Ewert, Jesse Burns, Green and Ethan Bartlett won silver with a season best time of 3:40.74; and the 3200m relay team of Reese, Garcia, Cox and Birk finished fourth with a time of 9:28.02.
The Paonia men's 400m, 800m and 3200m relay teams are qualified for state.
Also among the state's top 18 qualifiers are Ewert in the 400m dash; Ewert and Green in the 800m run; Bartlett and Green in the 1600m run and Bartlett in the 3200m run.
State qualifications don't necessarily mean athletes will compete in the event and are subject to change prior to the start of the meet.
