On Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, Kurt Nicholas Raith, loving husband, son, brother and a true friend, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 38 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. Kurt was born on June 22, 1981 in Evanston, Illinois, raised in Skokie, Illinois, and has been part of the Paonia community since 2011.
Born and raised in the Chicago area, Kurt graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2004 with a bachelor’s of science degree. He worked as a school teacher in the Chicago area for a few years following, and then started his first business printing t-shirts before moving to Paonia, Colorado. He and his wife Anna decided to open a restaurant named Snow Dogs, which together they owned and operated for five years. After a successful and memorable time in the restaurant business, Kurt then moved on to work at Dependable Lumber. During his time at the restaurant and Dependable Kurt met so many awesome people whom he would consider great friends. He then went on to property management at Redwood Arms.
On Dec. 27, 2008, he married Anna after nine years of knowing one another. After 10 years of marriage, Kurt’s love and cherishment for Anna never faded.
Kurt enjoyed movies. Some favorites included Indiana Jones, “Back to the Future,” “Jurassic Park” and Star Wars. He was one to always quote you a line at the right time. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing on the Grand Mesa and Lost Lake. He was a kind, generous, compassionate, and a loving man with a heart of gold whom he selflessly donated to someone in need of a heart.
Kurt is survived by his wife, Anna Raith; his parents, Michael and Gail Raith; his sister, Linnea (Eric) Gruberman; brother, Erik Raith; his nieces, Paige, Sammie and Morgan Gruberman; his mother-in-law, Karolina Ogrodny; his brother-in-law, Edward Ogrodny; his brother-in-law Jozef
(Joanna) Ogrodny; and his nephew and niece, Charlie and Amelia Ogrodny.
Those who knew Kurt, even just a little, lost a shining light in their lives. But knowing Kurt, he would precede by quoting his favorite movie: “The Force will be with you. Always.” — Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Paonia, Colorado, Monday, Oct. 14, 2019. Visitation 9- 11 a.m. and the funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia. A celebration of life for Kurt will be held on a later date in Chicago, Illinois.
