Vera Mae Finch Burkes died July 19, 2019, in Monument. She was 96.
She was born Jan. 21, 1923, to Robert Finch and Fannie Brown in Esbon, Kan. When she was 3, her family moved to Simla.
After graduating from Lewis Consolidated High School in Monument, she won a scholarship to the University of Colorado in Boulder. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1945.
She married Ovid Burkes Feb. 19, 1946, in Houston, Texas.
After the Burkes retired, they moved to Austin.
She worked as an accountant and teacher. She enjoyed her professional life, reading, entertaining and spending time with family.
She is survived by her children, Robert (Son Nguyen) Burkes, Peggy (George) Schreyer, Kathy (Larry) Pope, and Richard Burkes; grandchildren, George Schreyer, Samuel Schreyer, Benjamin Pope, Peter Pope, Betsy Pope; and great-grandson, David Schreyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ovid Burkes.
The funeral service will be held Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. at Monument Community Presbyterian Church in Monument. Graveside services will be in the veterans' section of the Grand Junction City Cemetery on Aug. 12 at 3 p.m.
