Dear Editor:

I would like to thank Senator Donovan for introducing Senate Bill 21 -- the Public Lands Day bill -- into the state legislature recently. This is a great effort to designate a state holiday celebrating our public lands and recognizing all that they provide us as a community and as a state. Our community depends on public lands more than most; we choose to live here because we have such great access to these beautiful, public places. This silent appreciation for public lands is something shared by anyone who lives in Delta County and on the Western Slope. Public lands are part of our identity and we don't often feel the need to have to express that. Circumstances are changing, however, and it's clear that public lands need our voice now more than ever. We need to stand up for our public lands. Senator Donovan's bill is a step in the right direction.

Cheryl Day
