Monica Garcia

Let’s start at the beginning — Hi! I’m Monica Garcia, and I am the new managing editor at the Delta County Independent. This is my third(ish) week at the paper, and I am excited to learn about the communities we serve and the people who call Delta County home.

The paper

You will be seeing some changes in the DCI, and maybe you have already noticed them. We have looked at our design, content and, the biggest of all, our online presence.

The Delta County Independent has a new website — please go check it out. We are going to be posting daily, and if you are a subscriber, you will have access to all our online content. We have also been more active on social media. If you are on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, give us a “like” or a follow. We will be posting throughout the day, sharing the latest content.

The biggest part about these changes are, good or bad, we want to hear from you about how you feel about them. If you are in the neighborhood, swing by the office. You can also reach me at monicag@deltacountyindependent.com or by phone at 970-874-4421.

My background

I attended Metropolitan State University of Denver where I earned my bachelor’s degree in journalism (concentration magazines) with a minor in aviation.

After graduation, I was offered an internship at the Montrose Daily Press. After spending a summer here, I returned home to Denver. I then worked for an online publication and then the Denver Post.

In October 2017, I was offered and accepted the position of news editor at the Montrose Daily Press and returned to the Western Slope.

Since then, I have helped cover everything from features about folks in town to school threats and much more. I have assisted in every editorial aspect of the paper. At last year’s Colorado Press Association awards, the paper earned several awards, and I am proud to say that my work was recognized.

My family

I grew up in Denver and I have lived here on the Western Slope for almost two years now. My boyfriend, Dennis, and I bought a house in the area almost a year ago. He has a son, Henry, and we share a dog, Hank, and a few chickens.

We enjoy the Western Slope way of life. We enjoy fishing, camping and tending to our garden, among other things. Although I am from Colorado, many of these activities I am really just learning to do, or am doing consistently for the first time. Which got me thinking…

My column

Honestly, this is the first time I am writing a column. Have I read many columns? Yes. Have I edited a number of columns? Yes. But writing one is a new experience for me.

Growing up on the Front Range is slightly different than growing up here, something I have learned from Dennis, who grew up here. There are many “Colorado activities” that I have not experienced. With my column I hope to do just that.

Titled “Colorado native,” my column will detail the latest Colorado adventure that I have experienced. But I need your help. There are a lot of fun activities that I have not heard of or even thought to experience. I am asking you, the reader, to suggest some for me.

If there is something you think I should check out, drop me a line.
