Delta High School's cross country teams opened the season with a split squad over last weekend. A partial team participated in the Grand Mesa County Line meet while a few athletes were participants in Saturday's Central Warrior Invitational at The Trails at Matchett Park.

The Grand Mesa event had three teams making the trip to the top of the Mesa to participate in what can only be described as a beautiful experience, if for nothing more than the trip to the race.

Delta head coach JB Lopez was somewhat disappointed with the turnout, but he also believes there will be a time when others will join the three teams for a larger competition in the future. One of the things making the race a special event was the absence of mosquitos.

Ouray senior Cooper Rondinelli won the boys race in 22:13.25 and Delta senior Beki Atchley ran the race in 27:37.12 to win the girls division.

Delta's top finish in the boys division was senior Andrew Toole who placed seventh in a time of 27:05.85. Junior teammate Jack Jones finished ninth (28:13.87) and freshman Austin Hurd was 14th (32:35.91).

Delta had eight runners in the event and won the team title with 15 points. Also scoring points for the Panthers were junior Emma Corbasson (31:19.19), senior Abby Williams (31:21.09), junior Remi Baldwin (31:26.72) and freshman Maria Lamas (32:07.51).

Six runners were in the field at Matchett Park on Saturday. John Ames had a good run in the boys division and finished third with a time of 17:07.80. Junior Shad Lewis had a strong kick in the final meters of the race to place ninth in 17:33.90. Delta's third runner, sophomore Doyle Young, finished with a time of 20:43.0 in 30th place. In order to be eligible for team points there must be five runners in the competition.

The Delta girls' contingent also had three entrants in Saturday's race with sophomores Aubree Andre and Grace Hall crossing the finish line in nearly the same instance. Andre was awarded 23rd (24:58.40) and Hall 24th (24:58.60). Senior Hana Hollenbeck recorded a 30th place finish with a time of 26:47.60.
