Delta High School's cross country season began last Saturday at the Basalt Longhorn Cross Country Invitational which was held at Crown Mountain Park in El Jebel.
There were 15 high schools registered for the 5000 meter race, both boys and girls, on Saturday.
In the boys event, Glenwood Springs won the team title with 36 points, and Soroco's Ben Kelly claimed medalist honors with a time of 16:00.
For the girls, Rifle's Sarah Wagler put nearly a minute between herself and second place. Wagler's winning time was 19:50. Chloe Veilleux (Soroco) was next with her time of 20:30.
Delta's John Ames began his season with a time of 18:04 to place 17th. The next three Delta runners included Logan Freed (30th), Shad Lewis (35th) and Elias Carlson (46th).
On the girls' side, Delta's Beki Atchley placed 17th in a time of 22:53. The next three runners for the Panthers were Ahna Richards (21st), Abby Williams (34) and Hannah Hollenbeck (44th).
This year's roster includes 25 athletes, nine female and 16 male.

During a preliminary hearing in Delta District Court on Tuesday, Jan. 15, Judge Steven Schultz found probable cause for second degree murder charges against Heather Jones.
Jones previously faced three counts in the shooting of Ryan Redifer in Paonia on Jan. 12, 2018 -- assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree and violation of a protection order.
