Panthers 2-3 after big softball schedule

The Delta Panthers wrapped up their first full week of softball competition with two wins and three losses. Even with the three losses, Delta is leading the 4A WSL with a 1-0 league mark and a 2-3 record overall.

Delta's week began with Rifle on Sept. 1. A 10-run third inning turned the game around and allowed the Panthers to score a 15-4 decision in five innings.

Hannah Easter led a 12-hit attack with three hits, including a double and three RBIs. Lily Lockhart also tallied three RBIs on two hits, with three other players getting two hits.

Keilee Womack picked up the win for Delta.

Against Montrose on Sept. 3, the Panthers trailed until the sixth inning where they exploded for six runs and an 11-8 lead. Montrose scored four unanswered runs in the seventh inning to win the game 12-11.

Womack and Lockhart hit home runs for Delta and Easter was 3-4. Womack finished with four RBIs in the game.

The Panthers traveled to Henderson for tournament action last weekend. Adams City, 5A East Metro League, was Delta's first opponent.

Delta played to a 20-9 win over the Eagles. Megan Sandoval was 4-4 with five RBIs that included three triples. Saydee Culver also was 4-4 with a double and a triple. Lockhart had four RBIs on two hits, one of which was a home run.

Easter picked up the win.

Delta faced the East Metro League's leading team, Prairie View, in its next contest. The Thunderhawks outhit Delta to score a 16-1 win.

The Panthers' final game of the weekend was a rematch with Prairie View for the tournament title. This game was more evenly played with the Thunderhawks claiming a 9-4 victory based on the strength of a six-run third inning.

Lockhart hit her third home run of the season and had a double to lead Delta's offense. Easter, Womack and Sarah Parker all had two hits apiece.

Delta plays visiting Durango in double-header action this Friday, Sept. 11. The first game is set for a 4 p.m. start.

The Panthers will also host Cortez's Panthers on Saturday for another doubleheader with a 12 p.m. start time set for the first game.

Looking at next week's schedule, Delta is in Gypsum for a 4 p.m. start time with the Eagle Valley Devils.
