Delta head wrestling coach Clayton Curtis (12 years head and three as an assistant coach) knows there is plenty of work to be done early on in the 2018-19 wrestling season. "Even though this is a rebuilding year for us because we lost a ton of seniors last year, I still feel that we will be very competitive in 3A," noted Curtis.
There have been 23 athletes putting in quality time preparing for the coming season for the Panthers. Delta will have plenty of quality coaching experience to go around for the practices this year. Back is Luis Meza who has 13 years of experience with Rudy Fantin back with his six years of mentoring. Jake Richards will be in his second season with Derek Horn sporting two years as well. New comers Drake Horn and Luke Laurita are familiar with Curtis' system having wrestled for Delta High School and having a year under their belts.
Freshmen athletes have the top number out this season including Ben McCash, Tavis Chaffin, Tre Glover, Niclole Koch, Joseph Avila, Tim Horn, Bus Butler and Bobby Davis.
This year's sophomore contingent includes Ben Koch, Jarrin Crandall, Jeffery Griffith, Eli Miramontes, Nico Cook and James Goff.
Ku Htoo, Colby Wilson, Ethan Lawrence, Gauge Lockhart and Brandon Butler are the juniors who have been practicing.
Delta's senior corps is made up of Kolby Keller, Aiden Barrios, Andrew Toole and Quan Do.
Back in the starting lineup for Curtis in 2018 is Ben Koch (126), Wilson (138), Barrios (170) and state qualifier Lockhart (195) who was one match away from placing at state last season.
Curtis is optimistic for success this coming season. "I expect all the guys mentioned already, plus a handful of other guys, to be top performers. We have a strong freshman class and a handfull of other wrestlers, sophomores through seniors, that will be pushing for the varsity line-up." Curtis also notes other factors that could change who might draw a starting spot on a given night. "There are so many talented wrestlers this year who could be in the varsity line-up that I don't want to say there are certain guys who will be starters each week because I know that could change next week."
On Dec. 2, officers of the Delta Police Department responded to a report of an assault. Officers spoke with a 64-year-old male with a bleeding injury on his neck.
