Paonia's Eagles entered the Region 7 2A tournament as a No. 23 seed. No. 7 Simla hosted region 7 play with No. 26 Telluride and No. 10 Byers in the field.
Paonia (14-8) played Byers (16-5) to begin tournament action. The Bulldogs used a big second half to turn back the Eagles, 51-36, and advance to the title game against Telluride, a 57-52 winner over Simla. Byers went on to win the Region 7 title with a 51-39 win.
Byers 51, Paonia 36
The Bulldogs trailed Paonia, 19-17 after two periods. A halftime talk from the Byers' coaching staff must have made a big impression on the players. Byers hit the floor running and left little doubt as to who was about to win with a 19-8 run.
Paonia wasn't able to keep up in the fourth quarter either as the Bulldogs put the game away with a 15-9 effort and the 51-36 victory.
Senior David Lozano was Paonia's leading scorer with 11 points and senior Kyle Long finished with eight counters.
Paonia ended the year with a 14-9 record.
Huskies 48, HHS 36
The Hotchkiss girls' basketball team visited the plains last week to play in the Region 2 2A tournament in Yuma. The Bulldogs (15-7) were seeded 18th and drew No. 15 Highland (17-5) on March 1 as their first round opponent. The Huskies used a first half scoring advantage to emerge a 48-36 winner.
The biggest setback for Hotchkiss in the game was a 23-13 first half that they never fully recovered from.
The Bulldogs closed the gap in the third quarter with a 12-9 advantage but slipped in the fourth quarter on a 16-11 Highland run to end the game at 48-36.
