First-round play in the First Colorado National Bank Basketball Tournament in Delta was a win for Paonia's Eagles, 58-48. Their opponents, Cedaredge, did not go quietly in the late stages of the contest. A 21-7 Bruins' spurt in the fourth quarter was just too late and too little as time ran out on Cedaredge.
Paonia took a five-point lead, 14-9, to the second quarter and duplicated the 14-point effort in the second quarter for a 28-19 halftime lead.
The Eagles connected on five three-point shots in the third quarter and bolted to a 23-8 run that extended their lead to 51-27 with one period left to play. David Lozano and Soul Connolly had two treys apiece in the run with Lozano scoring 10 points and Connolly eoght in the frame.
Cedaredge had a nearly equal run in the fourth quarter with Coby Rupp scoring 12 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Bruins on a 21-7 run closing the final margin of victory for Paonia to 10 points, 58-48.
Connolly shared the games' top point-production honor with Cedaredge's Rupp with an 18-point night of his own. Lozano added 17 points for the winners giving the Eagles two players in double figures for the contest.
Paonia met host Delta in the FCNB title game on Saturday, Dec. 22. Results of the final day of the tournament will appear in the DCI's Jan. 2 issue. Cedaredge faced Hotchkiss for consolation honors earlier on Saturday.
