Paonia boys relays finish strong in Delta

If the opening track meet of the season is an indication, the Paonia boys relay teams should have a good year after placing in the top three in three of four races.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Alejandro Garcia, Logan Green, Ethan Bartlett and Harley Ewert opened the meet with a second-place time of 9:01.77.

The 4x200 team of Ewert, Noah McDanial, Green and Jesse Burns placed third with a time of 1:39.75; and the team of Ewert, Burns, Bartlett and Green won bronze with a time of 3:52.72.

Paonia scored 50 points to finish seventh at the 14-team meet. In individual events, Simon Cox placed fourth in the 300m hurdles with a time of 47.65, and Calvin Reese placed sixth with a time of 50.06.

Bartlett won bronze in the 3200m run with a time of 11:23.16. In the 1600m run, Bartlett and Shilo Trowbridge of Palisade battled for position down the stretch, with Trowbridge placing third in 4:58.67 and Bartlett fourth in 4:58.86. Meet record holder Colton Stice of Gunnison won the race in 4:46.55.

In field events, Markem Buzzell took third in discus with a throw of 114 feet, 6 inches.

Paonia Girls

The Paonia girls won last Saturday's 4x200 meter relay on their way to 70 points and a tie with rival Hotchkiss for fourth place at the 15-team meet.

In a tight race between Vail Christian, Cedaredge and Hotchkiss, Paonia senior Poppy Lightfoot anchored the 4x200 relay team of Alexandra Eaton, Sadie Lee and Lyla Hayutin-Baril to a first-place time of 1:56.45.

Katya Schwieterman won silver in the 3200m run with a time of 14:06.6. fifth with a time of 6:34.46. In field events, senior Sabrina Leighton placed third in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, one-half inch.

Eaton, Lee, Abby LaBounty and Lightfoot won bronze (4:40.90) in the 1600m relay. In the 3200m relay, LaBounty, Cristina Rankin, Ceylon Carter and Schwieterman placed fifth.

Eaton placed fourth in the 100m dash with a time of 13.74. Eaton was the highest 2A placer in the 300m hurdles, finishing fifth with a time of 51.44.

Lauryn Kiefer won bronze in the discus with a throw of 98 feet, 10 inches, and Hayutin Baril cleared 29 feet, 7.5 inches to place fourth in the triple jump.

In the 400m dash, Abby LaBounty and Ceylon Carter placed fifth and sixth, respectively for the Eagles.
