North Fork baseball teams cleaned up on Saturday at Ignacio, dominating 2A District 5 teams Dolores and Ignacio. Paonia slipped past Dolores 14-2 in its first game and then shutout host Ignacio 17-0 in game two. Hotchkiss also defeated the two 2A District 3/5 teams (see related story).
Paonia 14, Dolores 2
Jaden Miller was awarded the win in Paonia's conference game against Dolores (3-9, 2-4). Miller struck out 16, and allowed four hits, two runs and one earned run in six innings.
The Eagles hit only singles and doubles for the game, and earned all of their 14 runs. Anders Schopp averaged .800 with two RBIs and a double. Miller batted .600 and had two earned runs and two 2B.
Kayden Seriani was 2 for 5 and led in RBIs with five. Podgorny was 2 for 3 and made four of the team's 14 earned runs.
Paonia succeeded on all seven stolen base attempts, led by Slater Podgorny, who also leads the team in stolen bases.
The Bears scored their runs in the second inning to trail, 5-2. Paonia broke open the game in the seventh with seven runs.
Paonia 17, Ignacio 0
Schopp was awarded the win in Paonia's conference game against Ignacio. The senior allowed two hits, walked three and struck out four in three innings for an OBP of 1.667.
At the plate, Clay Campbell was 1 for 1 with one RBI, Soul Connolly was 2 for 3, Miller averaged .667 with two RBI and a double, and Seriani was 1 for 2 with three RBIs and a home run. In Class 2A, Seriani leads in HRs with seven.
Paonia was 9 for 9 in stolen base attempts, with Miller and Seriani each stealing two. Samuel Erickson, Grey Neal, David Lozano, Campbell and Podgorny also had stolen bases.
The Eagles were 10-0 heading into Tuesday night's home game against Grand Junction. (You may remember that last year the Eagles surprised the 5A Tigers with a come-back, 7-5 win at Grand Junction.) They face Moffat County (Craig) today (Wednesday, April 18) at Canyon View Park in Grand Junction, and host a DH against Meeker at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at Volunteer Park.
Paonia also picked up a doubleheader to make up for early-season cancellations, and will end the season on May 4 with a DH against 6-4 Sanford, at Gunnison.
