The Paonia girls tennis team placed third at the 3A Region 8 tennis tournament.
At two singles, senior Jacquelin Mora placed second in the region. Mora then lost a challenge match to Aspen. While only the top two placers in each division advancing to this week's state tournament at Greeley, Mora, who finished the season with an 11-2 win-loss record, is an alternate to go to state. She also maintains her runner-up status, said head coach Dee Holt in an interview.
At one doubles, junior Shay Glaser and senior Carson Collins placed third overall.
At four doubles, freshman Izzy Houseweart and sophomore Amelia Hickham placed fourth. Both are first-year players. "For a couple of gals that didn't pick up a racket until eight weeks ago, it's incredible," said Holt.
Senior Alice Carrillo placed fourth at one singles. Carrillo took a bad fall in her final match, but kept playing, said Holt. That highlights just how dedicated and scrappy the team has been this season, said Holt. "We've had such a great team this year."
The tournament saw a lot of long, long matches, some running between two and three hours, said Holt. "It was amazing to see these athletes play a long game, take a 30-minute break, then turn around and do it again."
On May 1, the Cedaredge board of trustees met for a special meeting to appropriate an additional $35,000 from reserves as a loan to the golf course fund.
These funds will be used to purchased a used turf utility vehicle, a spray rig, and to make improvements to the kitchen and dining area of the restaurant.
