Paonia's Space to Create preliminary feasibility study is under way. The Minnesota-based Artspace team will provide feedback and advice for creating a live/work, multi-use or other creative development in Paonia. The study will kick-start the process of creating affordable space for creative artists and entrepreneurs and will help Space to Create to visualize the Paonia project and identify potential for sustained community impact.
As part of this fact-finding process, the Artspace team will meet with artists, business owners, city officials, funders, and other stakeholders Jan. 16-18. A public meeting will be held to welcome community participation and to generate a buzz. There will be a series of focus group meetings on the following topics: Arts & Arts Organizations, Finance & Funders, Businesses, and Civic Leaders. The size of the focus groups will be limited and is by invitation.
While the focus groups are limited and attendance is by invitation, the general public is invited to learn more by attending an event beginning at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the Paradise Theatre. "Everyone is invited to learn more about the Space to Create project and to offer ideas," said Space to Create project manager Elaine Brett. "We hope to fill the Paradise and generate a lot of excitement."
Following the feasibility study, the Space to Create team will begin a market survey that will collect additional information from the community. The community will then be invited to participate in an online survey intended to further characterize community needs, willingness to participate, and local demographics.
The Space to Create team urges public participation in the Jan. 17 community meeting. Those wanting to be a part of the focus groups are asked to contact Susie Kaldis-Lowe at email@example.com.
Space to Create Colorado is a collaborative effort to provide affordable workforce housing and working spaces for creative sector entrepreneurs and artists in rural, small town and mountain communities in Colorado. The initiative is led by Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) in the Governor's Office of Economic Development and International Trade, in partnership with Artspace, the Boettcher Foundation, Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), and History Colorado. This collaborative effort will assist Colorado communities in accessing state, federal, and local government resources, and include private sector and philanthropic support. The Town of Paonia was chosen through a competitive application process to participate in the state's program.
