The Paonia Eagles went 2-2 to place third at last weekend's 2A Western Slope League volleyball tournament in Meeker.
In their opening game, Carly Horn had 32 assists and Poppy Lightfoot made 13 kills in 19 attacks in the 3-0 win over Vail Christian. Paonia finished day one of the tournament with a 3-0 loss (25-13, 25-17, 25-15) to league champion Meeker (23-0).
On day two the Eagles played to a 3-1, 25-21, 23-25, 25-10, 25-21 loss to 18-5 Vail Mountain. which finished second in the league. In their final game, a 3-0, 25-19 25-16, 25-19 win over Rangely, Lightfoot had 21 kills and Horn had 34 assists.
Paonia takes a 13-10 record in to this week's regional competition. Out of the top 36 teams advancing to regional play, Paonia comes in at No. 23 in CHSAA RPI standings. This Saturday they face No. 2 Denver Christian (22-1) and No. 35 Calhan (10-12) at Lakewood.
At No. 8, Vail Mountain hosts No. 17 Limon and No. 29 Dayspring Christian and No. 3 Meeker hosts No. 22 Colorado Springs and No. 34 Wray.
Regional winners advance to the state championships Nov. 8-10 at the Denver Coliseum.
