The Paonia cross country team competed at the Anna Banana Invitational in Fruita last weekend. The race is run in honor of Anna Janowitz, a member of the Fruita cross country team who died in a tragic car accident. Janowitz loved the sport and inspired many in the cross country family.
The 5k course is a fast one and runners often post some of their best times of the season at the race.
The Paonia girls' team was paced by Chelsea Meilner, who finished the course in 20 minutes, 24 seconds. Brooke Hillman was next at 22:37, and Nora Dransfield (23:41), Courtney Van Vleet (27:56) and Megan Limone (29:02) rounded out the girls' times for Paonia.
The Eagles boys' team was led by Caden Meilner, who set a new personal record with his time of 18 minutes. Tim Helmer was next with his season best time of 18:47. Ben O'Rourke was third for the Eagles with his new PR of exactly 20 minutes. Ethan Bartlett posted a time of 22:40 and Allen Harper was next at 23 minutes. John Deck completed the boys' times with his season best of 37:06.
The Eagles and many of the region's teams will run at Sweitzer Lake in Delta on Friday morning.
