Paonia was among 31 teams competing at the annual Battle Mountain Husky Invitational cross country meet at Avon. The meet attracts mostly Class 4A and 3A teams. Run on a new course this year, the winning girls time was about two minutes faster than in years past, and the winning boys' time was just over two minutes ahead of last year's time.
Paonia's boys team scored 377 points to place 13th overall and was second among Class 2A teams.
Out of 150 competitors, senior Ethan Bartlett placed 16th with a time of 19 minutes, 16 seconds. Elijah Evans 80th 21:22, freshman Alyster Birk 93rd 22:17, senior Logan Green 96th 22:34, and freshman Alejandro Garcia 98th 22:38.
Paonia's girls scored 351 points and finished 11th overall. Junior Katya Schwieterman led the team, placing 32nd out of 133 runners with a time of 24:18. Sophomore Tawny Roberts placed 53rd (24:18). Alexandra Eaton finished 84th in 26:15, Sophia Gonzalez placed 93rd in 27:07, and Jade Ellenberger finished 100th with a time of 27:29.
Of the four Class 2A teams at the meet, Lyons won both the boys and girls divisions.
Two of the four marijuana questions on the November ballot were narrowly approved by voters in the City of Delta. Measure 2F allows the establishment of medical marijuana centers. Measure 2H permits the establishment of medical marijuana cultivation, testing, research and manufacturing facilities.
