The Paonia Board of Trustees will consider the appointment a new trustee after receiving a letter of resignation from trustee Barry Pennell last week. The decision comes after Pennell and his wife purchased "our dream home just outside of town limits..." wrote Pennell in an email. They plan to complete the move the first week of October.
Pennell was elected last April to a four-year term ending in 2022. Last night's board meeting agenda included a discussion item "regarding board procedure" to fill the vacancy. Mayor Charles Stewart explained that the board of trustees can fill the vacancy by appointment, or through a special election. Since Pennell won't immediately vacate the seat, "There's not a rush," said Stewart. That gives the board time to consider the appointment.
Whether it decides to accept his resignation immediately or have him serve until his move is complete, "I will comply to the board's wishes," wrote Pennell in an email.
Letters of interest are being accepted at Paonia Town Hall. Per town code, the appointee will serve until after the next municipal election in April 2020, when a successor has been elected and qualified.
