With the 72nd annual Cherry Days celebration fast approaching, be sure to plan ahead, as some of the more popular activities require registration.
This year's Cherry Days Parade categories include: children (17 and under), groups, antique/classic cars, antique tractors, animal, political, business, and other individual. Registration fee is between $5-$50, depending on the category, with a higher entry fee for parade-day registration. If mailing your form, please send to the address on the form no later than June 30 to ensure timely arrival.
By popular demand, the Cherry Days Coal Shoveling contest returns to Paonia Town Park on July 4. Entry is $50 per team. Registration will also be accepted at 12:30 p.m. the day of the event. The contest pays homage to the coal-mining heritage of Paonia and the North Fork Valley. Teams of two will shovel one ton of coal into a hopper, with the team completing the task in the fastest time winning the grand prize. Participants must be 18 or older and sign a waiver. Because teams will be drawn in random order, it is requested that everyone arrive in front of the Town Park football field in time for the 1 p.m. start.
The second Cherry Days softball tournament will take place June 30-July 1 at Volunteer Park in Paonia. A men's wood bat tournament will be held June 30, and a co-ed tournament (with men using wood bat only) will be held July 1. Games start at 8 a.m. and are time limited to one hour. Each team is guaranteed three games. First-round losses will determine gold and silver bracket teams. Cost is $250 per team, with a gold bracket payout of $500. While teams wait for their games, they can compete in a time-killing corn hole tournament. Proceeds benefit the Paonia High School wrestling program. For additional details contact Nate at firstname.lastname@example.org or Eric at email@example.com.
The annual Cherry Days 5k run/walk happens Saturday, June 30. The course begins and ends at Apple Valley Park and is stroller friendly.
