Black Canyon of the Gunnison Park Ranger Gina Poulson will present "Unsung Heroes of Astronomy" at the June 18 meeting of the Black Canyon Astronomical Society (BCAS). The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Lions Clubhouse, 602 North Nevada Ave., Montrose.
Poulson will talk about individuals who have made significant contributions to the body of astronomy knowledge, yet remain widely unrecognized today. Also, she will discuss the importance of the moon in maintaining a stable environment for the Earth. The moon, often forgotten or dismissed as mundane, plays as important of a role in our world as these forgotten astronomers.
The BCAS stimulates public interest in and knowledge of astronomy in Delta, Montrose and Ouray counties. Monthly meetings are held in Montrose or Delta. The BCAS also holds public sky viewing events. For more information, visit BlackCanyonAstronomy.com or phone 970-856-7716.
BCAS is also excited to be partnering with the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Crawford State Park for an upcoming night sky viewing on Friday, June 7, at Crawford State Park.
