Qualified teachers should be armed

Dear Editor:

As a candidate for state House of Representatives HD61 the League of Women Voters, as one of only three questions, asked the following: What proposals would you pursue to secure student safety in schools?

Here is my answer:

I am in favor of training and certifying at state expense, school staff, who have had military or police training and want to carry concealed. Schools should not be sitting ducks which they presently are. Our local sheriff recommends biannual training and certification for those that do volunteer. He estimates the cost at $300 per year per volunteer using the same person that trains and certifies his officers. We just can't afford multiple full time "resource officers." This way a potential killer faces an unknown force as the number of school staff volunteering would be kept secret.

The government by the Second Amendment and the unalienable right to self-defense does not have the right to disarm the public. If we are to do anything about school safety we must protect our children. It is a misnomer to say "Gun free zone" as that only means those inside are defenseless sitting ducks to one bent on killing them.
