I am submitting this letter of support for Great Outdoors Colorado on behalf of the Interpretive Association of Western Colorado (IAWC). IAWC, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, that recently took over the operations of Fort Uncompahgre, a replica of a historic trading post built in the 1820s, located in Delta. Over 2,000 fourth graders come to the Fort each year to learn about the history of the Ute Indians, traders, trappers and the folks that operated the Fort between the 1820s and 1840s. Funds from GOCO have been instrumental in helping to expand the educational footprint of the Fort to allow for more opportunities for kids to experience the outdoors. We are in the process of creating outdoor tipi classrooms and overnight camping experiences for kids and their families. The Fort will also be the official location of the Nature Connection gear hub also funded by the lottery funds. The Fort was recently designated a Colorado Parks and Wildlife Schools and Outdoor Learning Environment (SOLE), a program funded by Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO).
IAWC supports the Conservation Trust Fund, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Great Outdoors Colorado and encourages lottery division reauthorization from the Colorado General Assembly.
