The Town of Paonia is asking to double your sales tax. If you think that this will encourage the town to develop fiscal restraint and work within budgets, you are dreaming. If you think the money will go to improve the streets and sidewalks, you are in for a rude surprise. The last time Paonia asked for a tax increase, it was a capital improvement tax, dedicated in a separate budget to things like paving streets. That tax got approved because the voters could see that it was solely for infrastructure. This year's request is not a capital improvement tax. It is a general sales tax. Which means it can be frittered away, any way they want.
Let's look at some recent history. While the streets of Paonia rotted, the council seriously discussed putting a roundabout on Grand and Third. Now, they are talking about building a new town hall, as if there is anything wrong with the current town hall. Also, money will flow into a housing project restricted to "creative" people. Are you one of the "creative" people that will take advantage of this project or are you just a normal human like me that gets nothing out of it? Another bad consequence of this proposed tax increase is that it will make a business in Paonia noncompetitive with the same business parked in the county where the tax doesn't apply.
I encourage the voters of Paonia to reject this tax. The town government needs to learn to live within its means, just like you and I do.
