Delta native Lewis Leroy "Roy" Selby died Friday, May 17, 2019, at St. Mary's ICU from pneumonia. He was 78.
He was born April 2, 1941, to Lewis and Hazel (Ready) Selby in Delta. He attended Delta schools, graduating in 1959. He joined the Air Force in 1960, serving in the military police. He spent time in Morocco.
Mr. Selby married Mary Rumsey on Feb. 14, 1965, in Delta. They had a daughter. The marriage ended in divorce.
On Oct. 7, 1972, he married Dorothy "Dee" (Gillett) O'Toole in Delta. They had a son. His wife died on May 9, 2000.
Mr. Selby married Virginia "Ginni" Kulm of Paonia on April 2, 2005, at the Mountain View Bible Church in Lazear. They lived in Delta.
Mr. Selby worked numerous jobs over his lifetime. He became a certified orthopedic shoe technician after injuring his right foot. He also did upholstery work and worked on antique cars. He served as a guard/counselor at the Honor Camp, now known as Delta Correctional Center. He engineered a boat loading tool and held a patent for an oxygen delivery system. He also worked on RVs and campers at Jim's Outback for years. With his wife he designed the First Christian Church building in Paonia.
Mr. Selby enjoyed working in his shop with his son and grandson, hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of Garnet Mesa Baptist Church.
Mr. Selby is survived by his wife, Ginni Selby; children, Clint of Delta, and Kari Long of Montrose; step-children, Tom Kulm of Palisade, Melissa Kincheloe of Wadesville, Ind., Lori George and Cathy O'Toole; grandson, Robert Selby; several step-grandchildren; sister, Catherine Tegeler of Delta; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Converse; brother, Charles Selby; and niece Joann Matthews.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 24, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Funeral services will be held at Garnet Mesa Baptist Church on May 25 at 10 a.m. with Pastor Gerald Hilterbrand officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
