If you're looking for some competitive fun over the July 4 weekend and want to support some good causes, consider these three fundraising events planned in conjunction with the 71st annual Paonia Cherry Days festival.

Mud volleyball benefits NF Horse Patrol

In conjunction with the 12th annual Bulls N Broncs War, the North Fork Horse Patrol is seeking teams to compete in the first ever mud volleyball tournament on July 2.

Games begin at 1 p.m. at the North Fork Horse Patrol arena on Mathews Lane. Teams of six must have one female player in the court at all times. Entry fee is $120 per team, with the winning team splitting the pot with the NFHP arena. A few teams have already registered, said organizer Shane Smith. "It could be worth it for somebody to win it."

To register your team, contact Smith at 970-261-2251 or Dustin Braslin at 201-2278.

Co-ed softball tournament to benefit PHS sports programs

If mud volleyball isn't your thing, how about softball? On July 1 the Men's Wood Bat Tournament will be held July 1 at Volunteer Park. Games, which have a one-hour time limit, begin at 8 a.m. Teams are guaranteed three games, with a gold bracket, and a silver bracket to be determined after first-round losses.

On Sunday, July 2, a co-ed tournament will be held (men use wood bats only).

Registration is $250 per team. A payout of $500 will be awarded the winner of the gold bracket in each tournament, with the balance going to the Paonia Eagles baseball and wrestling programs.

For detailed information, email Paonia wrestling coach Nate Wiggins at wsc149@q.com, or Eric Neal at eneal@lightworksfibercom.

5k benefits PHS cross country program

The annual Cherry Days 5k race happens Saturday, July 1. The run/walk begins and ends at Apple Valley Park. The course is the same as in 2016 and is both fast and stroller friendly. Participants will head east out of Apple Valley Park and to Black Bridge Road, then double back on a slightly different route to the park.

Entry fee is $30 for adults, $10 for ages 17 and younger, and includes a commemorative T-shirt. Awards categories include the oldest and youngest runner, most creatively dressed; age divisions include a 17-and-under division, ages 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, and best overall male/female in the Masters (over 50) category.

All proceeds benefit the Paonia High School cross country team. Pre-registration forms and a course description can be downloaded at www.paoniacherrydays.com under the "activities" tab, and should be postmarked by June 28 to ensure arrival; race-day registration begins at 6:30 a.m., at Apple Valley Park.
