Following a short but fierce battle with Stage 4 small-cell lung cancer, former Paonia police officer Bill Hart passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23.
Hart was a veteran of the U.S. Army and participated in Desert Storm. He was a member of the Paonia Volunteer Fire Department and served as an officer with the Paonia Police Department for almost 15 years.
Services for Hart will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Paonia Friends Church, 409 Third Street.
Approximately 45 minutes preceding services a procession of EMS and law enforcement vehicles from Paonia and surrounding areas will travel from the high school along Grand Avenue and up Second Street to the church. The community is invited to wear either red or blue to honor Hart's community service.
During a preliminary hearing in Delta District Court on Tuesday, Jan. 15, Judge Steven Schultz found probable cause for second degree murder charges against Heather Jones.
Jones previously faced three counts in the shooting of Ryan Redifer in Paonia on Jan. 12, 2018 -- assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree and violation of a protection order.
