Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee has received complaints about a telephone scam involving a male who identifies himself as a deputy with the sheriff's office and even provides a badge number. The caller says he's aware of an outstanding warrant, either for failure to comply with a jury summons or failure to appear for a traffic violation. He advises the person on the other end of the phone that they can avoid a court appearance by purchasing a prepaid debit card. He leaves a phone number, telling them to call for further instructions once they've obtained the debit card.

"We would never ask people to satisfy a warrant in that manner," said Sheriff McKee, who said the phone number has since been disconnected. "Any time you're asked to provide payment in an unsolicited phone call, please contact law enforcement first."
