Area cross country teams were busy competing in races in Ridgway, Gunnison and Fruita this past week. Delta and Hotchkiss high schools participated in the Ramble at the Reservoir at Ridgway State Park on Sept. 18, with both the boys and girls’ teams seeing action. The Panthers and Bulldogs also sent teams to Gunnison on Friday to compete in the Mountaineer Cowboy Invitational. Olathe’s Pirates had a boys team competing at Ridgway on Friday and Paonia was represented at Saturday’s Anna Banana at Snook’s Bottom in Fruita.

Delta’s contingent competing in Ridgway finished fifth in the girls competition and the boys were sixth. The Panthers were third in the girls division in Gunnison with the boys sending only two runners to that event and did not place in the top six in the team race. Hotchkiss finished second in the girls division in Ridgway and did not place in Gunnison as a team with just two runners competing. The Bulldog boys finished fifth in Ridgway and did not have enough runners (two) to qualify a score for the team competition in Gunnison.

Delta’s top runners at the Ramble at the Reservoir included Alex Toole (26th), Moses Huggins (33rd), Andrew Purvis (34th) and Andrew Priestley (36th). The top four girls for Delta at Ridgway were Kylee Terry (3rd), Jillian Carlson (16th), Ellie Ames (20th) and Olivia Madde (21st).

Delta’s top girls in Gunnison were Kylie Huff (8th), Jessica Dexter (9th), Shayla Curtis (13th), Marcy Schaal (18th) and Kassidy Wear (19th). Doyle Young and John Dexter finished 14th and 16th, respectively, in Gunnison for the Panthers.

Hotchkiss’ Paige McGovern was fifth in Ridgway and was followed by Karlie Egging (9th), Aubrianna Randlett (10th) and Adair Ela was 24th. Cece Houseweart finished seventh in Gunnison with teammate Leah Vader placing ninth. For the Hotchkiss boys at Ridgway, Kenny Drbohlav finished eighth, Hunter Thompson was 18th, Ben Rodriguez was 27th and Pablos Camacho finished 29th. In Gunnison, Camden Myers was 27th and Kegan Davis-Daniels finished 30th in the boys' race for Hotchkiss.

Olathe High School had a strong contingent of runners in the boys' division in Ridgway with the Pirates capturing third place with 54 points. Olathe runners responsible for the scoring were Miguel Almanza Silva (5th), Connor Ripley (10th), Cesar Franco Ramirez (13th) and Tanner Westerman (40th).

Paonia High School was the lone representative from Delta County to participate in a cross country meet at Fruita’s Anna Banana held at Snook’s Bottom. Paonia’s top five runners in the race were Leia Ellenberger (28th), Ceylon Carter (29th), Cristina Rankin (32nd), Abby LaBounty (33rd) and Emily Reedy (34th). Paonia scored 146 points to place fifth in the team race in Fruita.

For the Eagle boys, Alyster Birk continued his trend of being the first Paonia runner to cross the finish line in Fruita. Birk placed 14th to top Paonia runners with Alejandro Garcia (27th), Milo Chavez (34th), Diego Lareau (38th) and Jose Mojarro (40th) earning the next four scoring places for the Eagles, which finished sixth with 151 points.

The next cross country race for Delta County schools is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25, at Sweitzer Lake with the girls' race beginning at 10 a.m.
